PLANTING DISABLED FUTURES
In Planting Disabled Futures, Petra Kuppers and her collaborators invite us into virtual worlds teeming with disabled life. For those encountering the project for the first time, this juxtaposition—virtual worlds, disabled life—may seem suspect. Indeed, as disabled activists and artists have long observed, developers and users alike have often approached technology as a corrective to disabled bodymindspirits, both now and in the future.
Such bodymindspirits constitute the life force that is Planting Disabled Futures, only here, there is no corrective to be found. Through a series of multisensory encounters, the project presents us with crip wisdom expressed across multiple registers.
Here, virtual reality is not a barrier to disability futures, rather it is a conduit to those futures—to the many disability worlds to come.
